2K injection mould are two different materials that are injected into the same set of molds to achieve parts that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Such molding is able to support combinations of materials of different colors or hardnesses, significantly enhancing the appearance and assembly performance of a product. Due to their superior design flexibility, two-color molds typically require operation on dedicated two-color injection molding machines to ensure precise injection and fusion of materials.


In recent years, 2K injection moulding processing has become increasingly popular in the market. This production method not only beautifies the appearance of the product but also allows for easy color changes without additional process steps. As demand increases, so do the requirements for 2K injection mold manufacturers, especially in terms of the technical requirements for design and injection molding, requiring a higher level of expertise from the factory.


The basic process of customized 2k injection mould

1. 3D scanning:

If there are no readily available drawings, digital drawing files can be generated by 3D scanning the external structure of the product and stored in a format such as STP. In this process, it is necessary to carefully check the generated 3D drawings and the actual model of the size of the error to ensure that it is within the acceptable range.

2. Product analysis:

Before the mold design, the structure of the product must be analyzed. Evaluate whether demolding will be affected during the double shot mold opening process, and check whether there are key factors such as inverted buckles, demolding slopes, and the position of the glue opening. Convert 3D drawings into 2D product drawings and mark the dimensions and tolerance standards of key structures. Later injection molded parts need to be checked according to the drawings to confirm that the dimensions are in line with the standard.

3. Drawing the 2k mould structure:

After completing the product analysis, draw the 2k mould tools structure drawing according to the drawing. This will fully demonstrate the overall structure of the mold and will be sent to the mold processing worker and CNC machining center programmer for subsequent processing steps.

4. Moulding processing:

In the mould factory, the base mold is processed according to the drawing. This process includes a series of fine operations such as drilling. Usually, the mold blanks will be purchased from standard mold blanks to ensure the quality of machining.

5. Assembly and mold testing:

After processing is completed, the parts need to be assembled to check whether the mold fit is good. Subsequently, the test mold generally needs to go through T1, T2, and T3 three times to ensure that the product is in line with the requirements of the final confirmation before entering the mass production stage.

6. QC test:

After the completion of the trial mold, quality control (QC) testing is necessary to ensure that the injection molded parts meet customer quality requirements before they can be put into production.
